In March 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden announced in his State of the Union address that the U.S. would be building a temporary “floating pier” on the Gaza shoreline to deliver humanitarian aid to the starving population in Gaza. “No U.S. boots will be on the ground,” he promised.

Russian and Egyptian naval ships plan to hold joint exercises during a visit of Russian warships to Alexandria, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

According to the ministry, the ships that called at Alexandria are the Guards Missile Cruiser Varyag and frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov. As part of the call, on Russia Day, June 12, the Varyag will host a reception with representatives of the Egyptian Navy Command.

Last month, the Israeli military declared that it had taken “tactical control” of the Philadelphi corridor, the strategically important nine-mile-long and 300-foot-wide buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt. I

sraeli officials say that they took this action as part of an effort to decapitate Hamas roughly eight months into this war, claiming that the Palestinians have used this corridor to set up tunnels for funneling arms.

The Egyptian populace's anger could soon boil over if the Abdel Fattah Al Sisi government doesn't form a tougher response to Israel's offensive in Rafah. Israeli forces now have direct control of the about nine-mile Gaza-Egypt border, and this led to a flare-up in tensions as on Monday a rare shootout between IDF and Egyptian border troops resulted in two Egyptian soldiers killed.

Israeli and Egyptian forces exchanged fire across their border on May 26, in what appears to be an isolated incident that has caused an unknown number of casualties. The Egyptian Armed Forces have confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the incident, with the country having taken a neutral position in the ongoing conflict between Israel and various Palestinian militia groups. A number of sources have speculated that Egyptian forces mistook Israeli units for Palestinian militiamen, or else that Egyptian personnel on the ground opened fire without orders.
